Gotu Kola: A Time Honoured Ingredient in Skincare

Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica) also known as Brahmi, is derived from the Sanskrit name for Universal Consciousness in Vedic philosophy.  It is found growing throughout the Indian sub-continent and thrives near bodies of water. Known as a brain tonic & “the herb of enlightenment”, in Indian folklore it is said that gotu Kola is what gives elephants their long memory and longevity as one of their favourite foods. It’s also referred to as “the tiger herb” in India because wounded tigers are reportedly seen rolling around in it.

My Mom and I have made a conscious effort to continue to grow different herbs and flowers that are significant to our Indo-Caribbean Ancestry. This is the first year that we grew a patch of Gotu Kola near a small natural water hole here in Georgina, Ontario. It really flourished in the shade and grew to be a large patch with its creeping vines growing towards the water. I was able to make multiple harvests over the summer and into the warmer autumn days. We enjoyed making tea with fresh leaves and adding it to our super green smoothies. Being a tropical plant, it won’t survive outdoors this winter so we have transplanted some into smaller pots and will be bringing them inside until next spring.

An Herb Cherished For Millennia

In Ayurveda, it is classified as a rasayana, rejuvenating and adaptogenic herbs, having the ability to go where it’s needed in the body and provide support. It is said to slow the effects of aging and support the body's internal and external reactions to stress, It is believed to support many systems in the body including the nervous, circulatory, blood, lymphatic and urinary systems. It also works to reduce inflammation and support healthy joint movement. Gotu Kola balances all three doshas: vata, pitta and kapha which are present in all of our bodies. The leaves can be eaten directly off the plant and being part of the watercress family, it makes a great addition to fresh salads. It can also be taken internally in powder, tablet & tincture forms.

It’s important to consult with a medical professional prior to taking Gotu Kola supplements as it may have adverse effects when taken in combination with other medications.

Benefits for Our Skin

Gotu Kola is a well known herb celebrated for it’s antioxidant and regenerative properties.  It is rich in triterpene saponins and is also a great source of phytonutrients (flavonoids) that act as antioxidants and fight off free radical damage. Studies have shown that Gotu Kola contains polyphenols, flavonoid, beta-carotene, and vitamin C.

In skincare, Gotu Kola is known as a cicatrisant and therefore is able to speed up wound healing and is used topically for minor cuts and bruises, acne, eczema, psoriasis, and scar healing. It also can help to reduce dark spots and pigmentation to give the skin a brighter appearance. Research has shown that antioxidants help to protect against environmental damage and slow the signs of premature aging and boost the effects of other active ingredients in skincare products. Not to mention it’s anti-inflammatory benefits which help reduce puffiness, redness and irritation.

I can’t wait to introduce you to Gotu Kola during your next holistic skincare treatment! You will also be able to find it in a very special plant-powered, small-batch product coming soon !! Be sure to sign up for the newsletter for first access!
