Flower Power of Calendula: A Healing Herb for All Skin Types

In the world of natural skincare, certain ingredients have stood the test of time, captivating skincare enthusiasts with their remarkable properties. Calendula (Calendula officinalis), with its vibrant golden petals and remarkable healing properties, has rightfully earned its place among the natural skincare greats.

From its anti-inflammatory and wound-healing abilities to its nourishing and pro-aging benefits, Calendula offers a multitude of advantages for the skin. Calendula has been cherished for centuries for its healing and rejuvenating properties. Let's delve into the world of Calendula and discover why it has become a beloved ingredient in skincare routines worldwide.

We love to grow our own organic calendula in our own wellness garden and harvest the flowers from summer to late October. The flowers can be used fresh to make soothing herbal tea or dried and stored in a glass jar to preserve their beneficial properties.

Anti-Inflammatory Powerhouse

Calendula possesses potent anti-inflammatory properties, making it an ideal ingredient for calming irritated and inflamed skin. Its high levels of flavonoids and triterpenoids help reduce redness, soothe itchiness, and alleviate discomfort caused by conditions like eczema, psoriasis, and dermatitis. Incorporating Calendula-infused products into your skincare routine can provide relief and promote a healthier, more balanced complexion.

Healing Wounds and Scars

Thanks to its remarkable ability to stimulate tissue regeneration, Calendula is often used in skincare products aimed at healing wounds, cuts, and scars. Its anti-bacterial properties help prevent infection, while its natural collagen-boosting properties aid in the formation of new skin tissue, reducing the appearance of scars over time. Applying Calendula-based creams or ointments to minor cuts or acne scars can promote faster healing and a smoother skin texture.

Nourishment and Hydration

Calendula is rich in essential fatty acids, vitamins, and minerals, making it a fantastic ingredient for nourishing and hydrating the skin. These nutrients help improve skin elasticity, promote a healthy skin barrier, and combat dryness. Regular use of Calendula-infused skincare products can leave your skin feeling supple, soft, and deeply moisturized.

Pro-Aging Elixir

As a natural source of antioxidants, Calendula fights against free radicals that contribute to premature aging. Its ability to protect the skin from oxidative stress helps reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and age spots. Calendula also promotes collagen production, improving skin's firmness and elasticity, resulting in a more youthful complexion. Including Calendula-based serums or creams in your skincare routine can help turn back the clock and maintain a radiant, age-defying glow.

Gentle and Safe for All Skin Types

One of the most remarkable aspects of Calendula is its gentle nature, making it suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin. It rarely causes allergic reactions and is well-tolerated by most individuals. Its soothing properties make it an excellent choice for those with sensitive or reactive skin, as it helps calm and balance the skin without causing irritation or redness.

Making a Calendula Herbal Oil Infusion

My favourite way to use the dried flower is make an herbal oil infusion, a simple and effective practice that has been traditionally used for centuries. First, fill a mason jar with your dried calendula and top it up with organic jojoba oil (right to the top). You can also use extra virgin olive oil (organic if possible). Close the lid tightly and place the jar on a sunny window sill for one full lunar cycle (4 weeks). Occasionally shake the jar to move the flowers and oil. When your infusion is ready, open the lid and strain the contents into another clean mason jar. Make sure to really press and squeeze the strained calendula to ensure all the beneficial properties are present in your oil.

You now have your own calendula-infused oil that you can add to your skincare routine. Use a few drops daily as a serum for your face. It is ideal for treating the symptoms of eczema. You can also infuse the oil into other products such as creams, serums, body scrubs, or soaps.

We use our infused oil in our Calendula & Chamomile Soap Bars & Vitamin C Botanical Facial Serum.
